JOHANNESBURG – A police officer has been arrested and has appeared in
court for allegedly raping a woman detained for fraud.
The 45-year-old man allegedly raped the 25-year-old woman in her holding cell at Linden Police Station in the early hours of Sunday morning.
She was escorted to the hospital for medical attention the next day and has opened a case of rape.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate acting spokesperson Grace Langa says the suspect was denied bail in the Randburg Magistrates Court.
“The officer allegedly went to her cell in the morning claiming to want to help her with a statement and that is when he raped her.”
