An apparently drunk police
officer and his son caused chaos in Alberton yesterday when they attacked metro
police.
The 46-year-old officer,
who is stationed at Springs, was arrested yesterday afternoon when he allegedly
attacked motorists in Alberton, said Chief Superintendent Wilfred Kgasago from
the Ekurhuleni metro police.
Eyewitnesses told metro
police the officer missed vehicles by inches when he skipped a red robot. He
attacked motorists who called him to order.
“[The officer] allegedly
attacked one of the motorists with an expandable steel baton and one of the
motorists apparently removed the keys from the ignition and the man called his
son for the duplicate keys,” said Kgasago.
When his son arrived,
Kgasago said, the two attacked metro police officers on the scene and they had
to call for back-up to subdue the men.
The officer was arrested
and charged with assault, drink-driving and resisting arrest.
“The son will be facing
charges of assault and interfering with police officers’ lawful duties,” he
said.
They would appear in the
Palm Ridge Magistrates’ Court today.
