Police officer up for drunken driving

According to the police, the officer is alleged to have been involved in a collision involving three cars on the R40 from White River to Nelspruit on Friday afternoon.

MOMBELA- On Monday,the Branch Commander of the detectives in White River, Lt Thokozani Zungu (31) appeared before the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court on charges of reckless and or negligent driving, failing to stop after an accident and drunken driving.

According to the police, the officer is alleged to have been involved in a collision involving three cars on the R40 from White River to Nelspruit on Friday afternoon. The police have confirmed that he had earlier allegedly collided with a Ford Bantam at the robot in Rocky’s Drift.

“He failed to stop and on the off ramp to Riverside Mall, he collided with another Ford Bantam and a Toyota Fortuner,” stated Brig Selvy Mohlala.

It is further alleged that other motorists blockaded his vehicle, removed the keys from the ignition and the police were summoned to the scene and noticed that Zungu, who was driving a state owned vehicle appeared to be under the influence of alcohol.

He was then arrested and taken to hospital for blood samples.

Zungu was not asked to plead and the matter was postponed to 30 July 2014.
