Description
Hillcrest KZN white suburb residents under siege from four violent gangs: residents say police lie about attacks
-- Beeld Afrikaans daily journalist Hilda Fourie writes on 2013-03-31
"While the police believe that there's peace in Hillcrest, a suburb west of Durban, KZN, South Africa, residents say they are under

siege - targetted by between three to five violent attacks a week by black male gangs since January 2013. The latest incident was a

housekeeper stabbed during an armed attack. Some of the attacks are so bad that locals give names to the gangs based on their

modus operandi. "Hillcrest is a small, peaceful suburb which is not under siege,' said colonel Vincent Mdunge of the SAPS. However the Hillcrest Neighbourhood Watch chairman Shaun Lyle disagrees: he says the police are 'talking pure rubbish' if they claim that no violent-crime incidents have been reported from Hillcrest. In fact at least 80 percent of all the incidents he knows about have been reported to the police and he made certain it was done correctly. They have been recording the incidents ver since the Hillcrest Neighbourhood Watch was launched six months ago - in response to the increase in organised criminal gangs attacking residents in the suburb."Police doesn't want to hear that there's such an increase in violence and organised crime, something I haven't seen here before,' he said. "I wish I knew why the attacks now are so many. It is most worrying.'

Residents identified at least four armed attack gangs:
- The Finger/Hammer gang, five to six men who attack people in the early-morning hours inside their homes and break their fingers

with hammers to get their jewellery. This gang was identified as having been involved in at least five armed houserobberies since

November. =================
- The Whoonga-gang - named after the drug consisting mainly of anti-HIV medicine ingredients - and which this gang of between three

to four men apparently use before going on their sprees. Whoonga a mixture of antiretrovirals, marijuana, ratpoison and/or heroin. It

allegedly gives the gang-members 'courage'. This gang was involved in at least three attacks. ===============
- The GateAmbush gang: a four-male gang wearing balaclavas and scarves to hide their identity - waits at the electronic gates of a

homeowner, waits until he opens it, then they drive onto his erf and turn off his alarm system, attack the homeowner by trapping him

inside his car. ==================
- The Panga Gang: At least three men with balaclavas, armed with machetes. It is is known that this gang watches a target-residence

at least an hour to observe the movements of its residents. This gang is described as 'extremely violent'. In one attack, they hacked

into a man's back so violently that the panga penetrated his lung. One member of this gang has been arrested.

"Enforce Security installs six new Watchmen community cameras at Hillcrest Park:
Enforce Security has broadened its watchful eye with the installation of six new Watchmen community cameras at the main entry and

exit points of Hillcrest Park. The conspicuous orange presence of Watchmen is sending out the message that Enforce cares about the community it serves and

protects. Chairman of the Hillcrest Park Community Association and Neighbourhood Watch, Shaun Lyle, said, "Following our research

into viable security options for our neighbourhood, Enforce offered a proactive solution to the rampant crime plaguing us all. We see

the Watchmen system, with its 'eyes in the sky' as contributing to tackling this problem with a 24/7 visual presence." The unique

feature that sets Watchmen apart from any other street surveillance camera lies in its ability to link a residential alarm to the

surrounding street surveillance. This innovative technology means that should a resident's home alarm be activated and it is linked to

Watchmen, the Enforce Control Room will then be able to monitor any suspicious activity, persons or vehicles through the visuals sent

by the cameras both on the residential premises and the visuals from the strategically positioned street cameras. This video footage

further provides vital evidence in solving criminal cases and can be used as evidence where criminal charges have been laid with the

SAPS. "The installation of these six new Watchmen cameras follows our successful trials in The Woods and Gillits Park areas where a

notable decline in criminal activity is now reported. In consultation with The Hillcrest Park Community Association and Neighbourhood

Watch, each camera has been strategically positioned to monitor the main entry and exit points as well as identified problem areas.

The cameras are monitored by our 24 hour Control Room and do not contravene any privacy legalities," said Jayson

Weideman,National Sales and Marketing Manager, Enforce Security Services. Shaun concludes, "We are confident that Watchmen is

the best workable solution to help bring this criminal scourge into check. Viva Watchmen Viva."
You will find the Watchmen community cameras monitoring activity at the corners of Hilltop & Inanda Road, Ridge & Inanda Road,

Inanda & Valley Road, Anthony Drive & Horseshoe Road, Stonewall & Springside Road and on Inanda Road at the Hillcrest Christian

Academy School.
