Gayle Graham: ‘HE drew his finger across his neck and mouthed the words I’m going to kill you’. After being brutally assaulted by a man in the parking lot of Durban View Park, local resident and mother of six Gayle Graham said she was harassed, threatened and intimidated by her attacker.

"Police Reservist Friend pulled out a firearm, pointing it at her husband while his wife was being punched"...
-- One of the man’s friends, who Graham alleges is a police reservist, pulled out a firearm and pointed it at her husband, Michael, who tried to come to her aid while she was being repeatedly punched.

She now fears for the lives of her family after her traumatic ordeal. “This all started over a parking space,” a shell shocked Graham told Northglen News yesterday evening.

Her left eye, forehead, chest and upper arms are covered in black and blue bruises inflicted by her attacker. The incident took place on Sunday afternoon at about 4.35pm.
“We were waiting in a queue of cars to find a parking for about 20 minutes. We were then motioned by one of the car guards that there was a space available. As my husband tried to drive into the space, we were stopped by a man claiming he was keeping the space for his friend. We said he couldn’t do that and my husband drove into the space.”
The man then ran around to Graham’s door as she tried to jump out of the car and slammed the door on her face.
“I was stunned, I remember blood pouring out of the bridge of my nose. He started repeatedly punching me in the face and chest. At one point I had my fingers in his mouth trying to push him back and protect myself. As soon as my husband jumped out of the car, my attacker ran through the parking lot and looked for somewhere to hide,” she said.
Her husband Michael said he remembers his wife shouting ‘he’s hitting me’ and tried to come to her rescue but was stopped by one of the attacker’s friends who pulled out a firearm and pointed it at him.
“I just froze as soon as he drew his weapon. I was furious that this man, who is a coward, laid his hands on my wife. I wanted to help her but the man with the gun wouldn’t let me. We decided to wait in our car for the police to arrive, all the while the man who assaulted my wife, and his friends shouted racial slurs. When I asked the police officers to check the man’s car for a weapon, he said ‘who are you to tell them how to do their job’,” Michael said.
When police arrived on scene, Graham began to recount her ordeal.
“While I was telling the officers what happened, my attacker leaned back on a car, drew his finger across his neck and mouthed I’m going to kill you. We were eventually asked to make a statement at the Durban North police station.
“When we got there, the police reservist said to the man who attacked me ‘don’t worry I’ll sort this out’.
Even as I was waiting for my statement to be taken, my attacker and his friends sat as close as possible to me.
He and his friends then waited until we left the police station almost four hours later and tried to intimidate us further by glaring at us,” she said.
Graham said she was in a state of shock and remained incredulous that her attacker was so brazen after the brutal assault.

(*Nothing was robbed: this was an out-and-out hatecrime)..

Lt Raymond Deokaran, spokesman for the station, confirmed a case of assault and malicious damage to property had been opened by Graham.
Her husband also opened a case against the reservist. “A detective has been assigned to the case and I can confirm that the man allegedly involved in the incident is not a police reservist at the Durban North SAPS. We are still investigating whether the man who allegedly drew his weapon is a member or ex-member of the police force,” Deokaran said.
