Two Mamelodi police reservists and a civilian have been arrested for
allegedly robbing a Somali family at gunpoint at their home in Mayfair, Gauteng
police said on Tuesday.
“Three reservists and a civilian told a Somali couple that they were
from national office and that they needed to search their house because they
got a tip off that they were drug dealers,” Warrant Officer Xoli Mbele said.
“They failed to produce a warrant but told the couple that if they
didn't open the house they would force their way in.”
The couple let the reservists, who were in police uniform, into the
house on Monday.
Once in the house, one of the reservists allegedly pulled out a gun and
demanded that the couple give them money, he said.
They took R12 000 from the couple as well as a cellphone and jewellery.
Two of the reservists and the civilian were apprehended by the community
when they tried to get away, said Mbele.
The third reservist managed to escape with the getaway car.
Police were called and they arrested the three robbers, two men and a
woman.
The group was facing charges of house robbery.
Police said they were following leads and the third reservist would be
arrested soon. - Sapa
