Bloodshed erupted on Pretoria’s streets outside the Union Buildings as police and protesting army soldiers openly clashed in running street battles.
Wednesday’s violence was sparked after more than 3 000 soldiers, who stormed past mobile police barricades setup through out the city to try and contain the demonstrators, broke open a gate leading onto the laws of the seat of government.
Armed with sledgehammers, pangas, knopkieries, knives and other handmade weapons, soldiers under the banner of the South African National Defence Union and South African Security Forces Union taunted police daring the cops to stop them as they swarmed through the gate.

Police from the National Intervention Unit, Diplomatic Unit, Air Wing, Public Order Policing Unit and from nearly all of Pretoria’s police stations having given soldiers an order to disperse threw stun grenades before they opened fire with rubber bullets.

Soldiers threaten retaliation against police

Soldiers who demonstrated outside the Union Buildings on Wednesday have threatened to retaliate after police opened fire on them with stun grenades and rubber bullets. A protest against working conditions and low salaries turned ugly with running battles between the two security forces.

One soldier, who would not give his name, said the police would regret their actions. “We are going to turn every street into a battlefield because we have been shot at by police. We are going to arm and we’re going to repeat what they’ve done.”
The Tshwane metro police say the action by law enforcement agencies was completely within their rights as the Union Buildings are a national key point which has to be protected at all costs.
