Two Johannesburg metro police officers were arrested for fraud, extortion and defeating the ends of justice.

The department's internal affairs unit arrested them after they were pointed out in an identity parade, spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said.

The officers allegedly arrested the driver of a company under false pretences, claiming that the company car's special permit was a forgery. They issued a hand written receipt, bearing false names and police numbers, for a R300 fine.

Minnaar said the officers were being held at the Johannesburg Central police station and were likely to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Friday.
