Dear Sir
Mr. Selebi is obviously out of touch with reality and more obviously has not bothered to read or understand the Firearms Control Bill.

Whilst Mr. Selebi may be pleased with the draconion powers given to the police his ANC comrades in KwaZulu Natal have expressed wonder, anguish and disbelief at the current ability of the police to make warrantless searches for firearms. He should read the Department of Safety and Securitys' report on the police abuse of powers in Search and Seizure before making such obviously selfserving statements.

The FCB adds no new crimes for the possession of illegal firearms. It adds no new differentiation between illegal and legal firearms. Will cost many times the incredibly poor estimate of R217 million which could be better spent on resources and salaries. Will not aid the capture of a single extra criminal.

The Firearms Control Bill is about ideology. It will not meet any claim made for it by the government and can have only one result. Increased crime as has been shown by every implementation of gun control.

Why the government is intent on making the lives of citizens even more miserable by giving crime a boost is the question that should be answered.
