Two senior police officers in Pretoria were suspended with immediate effect on Sunday for their involvement in corrupt activities, Gauteng police said.

"Brigadier Mathapelo Merriam Mangwane, Section Head of Central Firearm Registry (CFR) and Brigadier Hlamane Elias Mahlabane, Section Head of Firearm Compliance, were suspended from duty without pay effective today [Sunday]," Lt-Gen Solomon Makgale said.

On Tuesday, The Star reported that Mangwane was accused of accepting bribes from an employee at a Johannesburg gun shop in exchange for securing gun licences.

A third officer, an administration clerk, has been given a letter of intention to suspend her.

"She has been given until Wednesday to make a representation as to why she should not be suspended," Makgale said.

Makgale said it was disappointing that the people who were suspended had been given the responsibility of cleaning up the CFR.
