Police corruption so pervasive SA residents must record all their interactions with police to protect themselves:
Description
Smile at Police: founder of eBlockwatch Andre Snyman, says police corruption has become so bad that people need a recording as proof of incidents, or even as a weapon to try prevent officers from behaving illegally. “There is a rogue element in police, because they have been allowed to go ahead with all of this stuff for such a long time that they feel that they are untouchable,” Snyman says.

"Police Officers will mirror your attitude. If they do not …..Put them on Record. If you are pulled over by a police officer, smile and put your phone on record mode, says eBlockwatch anti-crime community forum. Very important tips when dealing with police when pulled over:
1. Attitude. The most important first step is to show a positive attitude. The police will mirror our attitude and this will set the mood for the interaction.
2. Have your cellphone connected to eblockwatch community support. Its specially designed features assist members connect to CommUnity support if warranted.
3. Tell the officers that you are being monitored by eblockwatch which is connecting to local Community Police and eblockwatch Anti-corruption networks. This will automatically raise the standard of the interaction.
4. Make sure that the police officers are aware that the recording is not being stored on your phone but on a computer connected to eblockwatch.
5. Do not tell them that you are recording the conversation but rather say that you are connected live to eblockwatch who are recording the conversation live on their computers in their office. The conversation will be forwarded to the local community Police Force chairperson in the area you are in.
6. Ask them politely to show their ID as you are aware of people who impersonate Police Officers and you need assurance.
7. Press your preset panic button if you feel insecure and let your nominated support members help monitor your situation. If they feel that they need further assistance there will be a contact number for them to call on the sms they receive from eblockwatch alerting them of your request for assistance.
8. Do not offer a bribe as you will be in more trouble if you are caught. Rather say that because you are a member of eblockwatch, an organization assisting anti-bribery teams to arrest corrupt police officers, it would not be right for you to give them money. This normally triggers a positive response and they let you go on your way.
9. Make short recording one after the other. This will stop the recordings from taking a long time to down load onto DropBox.
10. Dropbox.com is free and lets you share your videos and pictures.
11. Share your video with eblockwatch and we will mobilise community support if we believe you have been unfairly treated by police officers.
Lastly, we work closely with many good police officers who are honest and fair. Please do not expect us to go the extra mile for you if you do not show respect for our police officers who are looking after you. This system’s optimal power lies in all of us doing the right thing.
How to set up your cellphone to record police interaction
1. Register on www.eblockwatch.co.za
2. Connect your cellphone to eblockwatch’s community support panic button.
3. Down load the drop box App on your computer and phone. This will send the recording to the server.
Members of eblockwatch who have registered with their community support button put their cellphones on record as an officer approaches them. The video is streamed to eblockwatch’s drop box which saves the footage in a server preventing the police officers from forcing members to delete the evidence. This also prevents police officers from trumping up false charges.

Included in the conversation should be:
- The police car (make, model, colour, the number painted on the side of the car and the registration number).
- The police officer’s name and badge number.
- The number of officers.
- Your location and surroundings.

When you hang up, the recording is immediately sent to four emergency contacts you select, the eBlockwatch database and a police representative. Connect your cellphone to www.eblockwatch.co.za and further details will be sent to you giving your clear instructions on how to set up the software on your cellphone. Please note that details have changed as we have upgraded our software. Warning! Smile and be friendly but firm. Tell them your stop is monitored by a network of people connected to Police Generals.
