Hawks arrest cop killer

A 34-year-old suspect was arrested yesterday in connection with the murder of an Eastern Cape police officer.

Sergeant Xolani Sowambi, 35,  was allegedly hijacked and killed whilst en-route to work on Saturday 05 September 2015.

According to the Hawks, Sowambi’s private vehicle was found in Whittlesea following an all-night search by police.

Two suspects were seen running away from the vehicle after being stopped by police.

One of the suspects was arrested in Queenstown on Tuesday (08/09/2015)  and an unlicensed firearm was seized during the arrest by a Hawks task team.

The Acting Head of the DPCI, Major General Mthandazo Ntlemeza, and the Provincial Commissioner of the Eastern Cape, Lieutenant General Celiwe Binta, have welcomed the swift arrest.

“They have commended the breakthrough which will bring solace to the family of the late Sergeant Sowambi whilst investigations are still underway to haul in the remaining suspect.”

The arrested suspect is expected to appear in the Queenstown Magistrate Court tomorrow.
