A Detective Constable and a civilian arrested for attempted murder in Kwanonqaba - Western Cape

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has arrested a Constable and a civilian for assaulting a suspect who ended up being in a coma. The arrest was carried out today. The Constable is 34 years old and the civilian, who is a groundsman, is 38 years old.

It is alleged that on 21 February 2014 at 12h00, the Constable tried to arrest a robbery suspect in KwaNonqaba. The suspect stabbed the Constable with a knife and ran away. The Constable called for backup and went to look for the suspect. After locating the suspect, it is alleged that the Constable chased and caught the suspect.

It is alleged that this person was then assaulted with fists and he was kicked. The victim was taken to Kwanonqaba CID offices where the groundsman also assaulted him. It is further alleged that victim was further assaulted by hitting his head against the brick walls of the office. The victim suffered severe head injuries. He was taken by ambulance to George Schuur Hospital. The victim had brain, head and spinal injuries.

The matter was reported to the IPID, which opened an attempted murder docket. The suspects were arrested today, 10 March 2014; they will appear at the Mossel Bay Magistrates Court on 12 March 2014 on a charge of attempted murder.

The investigation continues.
