A
woman has died while in police custody at Marydale in the Northern Cape.
The woman was arrested for alleged public intoxication on Friday.
The Independent Police Investigative Directorate, IPID, has launched an investigation into the matter after the woman was found dead in her cell.
Police spokesperson, Sergio Kock says: "At this stage the police have found the body of a 44 year old woman who was arrested for drunkenness last night inside the Marydale cells."
"At this stage the cause of the death is unknown however an autopsy will be done to determine the exact cause of death," adds Kock.
The IPID, the independent police investigative directorate are investigating the case.
