The Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) has arrested the four police officers who were allegedly involved in the shooting to death of an alleged robber that was caught on CCTV in Krugersdorp on Gauteng's West Rand.

The incident occurred two weeks ago when Khulekani Mpanza allegedly fired several shots at the police officers before fleeing.
He was later wounded in the arm before he was cornered unarmed lying on a pavement.

In the video footage, Mpanza is then executed by a police officer while his colleagues watch on.

Ipid's Grace Langa says the three men and a woman have been charged with murder.

“We have just arrested the four police officers, who were involved in murdering the deceased, Mpanza. They will be appearing tomorrow in Krugersdorp Magistrate's Court. They are detained at Krugersdorp Police Station now. We had started the investigation, and it will continue, and once everything is complete we will send the docket to NPA for a decision.”

Police union Popcru has condemned the incident.

Popcru's Richard Mamabolo says, “We, of course, believe that immediately after the first shot, the suspect didn't have his gun on him anymore and police could have simply just insured that it was secured and of course call for paramedics. What happened after that was really quite shocking, and the time when the last two shots were made there was no imminent danger to the police at all. So, that cannot be then condoned, really.”
