WATCH: Members of the public laugh as thugs escape
from police van
A video has gone viral that shows how two men arrested by the SAPS
escape in from the police vehicle in Durban, while members of the public cheer
them on ....
The video went viral on
social media on Friday and shows the vehicle, with Pinetown SAPS branding
outside the Siza Hardware store on Stanfield Road.
One captive appears to bend
open the bottom portion of the canopy's door and squeezes out. Then he is seen helping
out a second suspect - all while onlookers cheer them on. There doesn't appear
to be an officer in the front seat.
The two men had been
arrested for possession of firearms.
"We are calling for a
full-scale investigation into this matter. If police were negligent, action
must be taken against them," Kaunda said in a statement.
"If a member of the
community assisted the suspects, [the] law must also take its course. We are
also disturbed at the behaviour of some members of the public who were watching
as the incident happens and turning this into a mockery instead of assisting
the police.
"We urge the people of
KwaZulu-Natal to work with the police because it is only through [a] strong
partnership between police and the community that we can fight and defeat
crime."
The video was originally
shared on the PharSide - Wildly South African Facebook page and already has
more than 121 000 views.
