A
group of 10 policemen have been nabbed for allegedly torturing and killing a
suspect Khutazile Mbendu in custody. Mbendu was arrested in connection with
theft in December last year.
Mbedu is alleged to have been beaten up en-route to the police station. It is also alleged that he was tortured with a device which gave him shocks. Following that Mbedu died four days later in hospital.
It's believed he succumbed to multiple injuries, including a broken leg.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) spokesperson Grace Langa says, "After an intense investigation by the IPID the 10 were arrested on Thursday. They will remain in police custody until a bail application next Tuesday.”
This is another dent on police's already tarnished image. This week eight former police officers were convicted of dragging Mozambican taxi driver Mido Macia to his death.
On Tuesday, another shocking video portrayed the high-handedness of two Douglasdale police officers. They have since been placed on leave after the video went viral.
