A FORMER SANDF
colonel is still on the run after he allegedly threw two hand grenades at his
wife in their Amanzimtoti home on Sunday.
The victim, a 30-year-old woman who was also in the army and believed to
be based on the Bluff, was declared dead upon arrival at Kingsway Hospital in
Amanzimtoti.
Yesterday a neighbour, who did not want to be named, said the woman’s
brother – who had been in the house in another room – had told him that the
couple had been arguing.
“He said he did not think it was serious at first but then heard the
explosion.”
The children are believed to be staying with relatives after being taken
there by the brother.
A neighbour said he had heard the explosion but thought it was a car
accident.
“When I went there, there were people there already and one took her to
hospital.”
He said when he went inside the house, part of the ceiling had
collapsed, some water pipes had broken, and electric cables in the kitchen were
stripped and live.
The neighbour said after resigning from the SANDF, the man had bought a
tavern in Amanzimtoti.
The first neighbour on the scene, Philani Khambule, said he would not
say anything to the media as he had already written a statement for police and
feared he might contradict himself.
Police spokesman Thulani Zwane said police were searching for the man.
They did not know what sparked the attack.
