A police constable has been arrested for allegedly stealing money from a crime scene in the north of Pretoria.
The officer was caught on CCTV camera taking the cash at Petroport filling station on the N1, where five men had bombed four safes on Thursday.
Police spokesperson Lieutenant Kay Makhubele said the officer in the explosives unit in Pretoria, went to the filling station to verify the kind of explosives used by the thieves.
“The officer saw the money lying on the floor, so he took some of it to his car. He did not realise his movements were captured on CCTV [footage]. He was arrested and the cash seized,” said Makhubele.
Makhubele said the officer had taken more than R5 000 and was charged with theft of cash.
He said the officer would appear in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court soon.
Makhubele said the case would be handled by the Sinoville Police Station.
