Gauteng crime stats skewed:
ISS

JOHANNESBURG - Police have the crime statistics
wrong, according to the Institute for Security Studies (ISS).
In September, the police commissioner revealed that
crime levels were falling.
But the ISS says South Africans are actually at a
greater risk of being murdered or attacked in their homes.
It says the figures are skewed, because police used
inaccurate population numbers.
For example, according to official statistics,
Gauteng recorded a five and a half percent decrease in attempted murder over
the past year.
But, the ISS says this category of crime actually
increased by almost two percent over this period.
In the Western Cape, police figures show a half a
percent rise in the murder rate.
But the Institute says it was actually up by 10
percent.
It's accused the police of misrepresenting the
facts, and is now demanding an inquiry.
