BARBERTON -Local police have been accused of negligence by community members.
This comes after they raised their concerns regarding documents such as criminal records and third-party claims that were lying on the floor at the old satellite police station.
It had been burnt down during the service-delivery protest in 2012.

“This is totally unacceptable. Why are the files that contain our personal details such as ID copies and criminal records lying on the floor?” asked one of the residents who didn’t want to be named.

“They were supposed to take them to the station because this building is no longer being used. They are very ignorant.

“They might be taking it very lightly, but once a person obtains your ID number, they can do anything to destroy your future.

“No wonder cases are not taken seriously. Maybe it’s because some of the information is lying here or they are hiding something. Njengoba live selakhohlakala.

“Ngalelinye lilanga sitotitfola sishade nebantfu bekufika singati ngenca yalobudedengu bemaphoyisa. “I always heard people say police are so ignorant, but from what I saw today, ngisutsi ngawo angifuni kucamba emanga.”

“Are we safe when such things happen? Is the department competent enough to protect victims of rape when such things happen?” the resident asked.

It’s not clear whether the documents have been lying there since 2012, or if they were only dumped there few days ago.

Mpumalanga News contacted the spokesperson for the local police, Const Tutu Nkosi.
“We were not aware of the matter, but we will go and investigate since we have our inspectorate team to check what is going on.

“Once that is done we will report on what has happened.”
