Police bosses are to launch a full scale investigation into several officers at the Randburg Police Station in Gauteng. This follows a month long SABC News investigation showing how police frequent a well-known drug hotspot.

At the same police station, five police officers have been arrested for crimes including those relating to drugs in the past year and a half. The SABC watched for four weeks as drugs were openly sold and police who frequent the area did nothing.

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson, Neville Malila says: “We’ve been monitoring police vehicles moving in and out, and also capturing drug lords exchanging money and drugs, there is police visibility but they do nothing? We will look at the movement reports, look and drivers and crew on those days for the specific vehicles.”

Malila says five officers from the Randburg police station have already been arrested, some for drug related activity.

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate says it takes allegations like these seriously. Since last year the IPID has investigated 2 320 criminal offences by police, including corruption.
