Cop on trial for stepdaughter’s rape

Johannesburg - The trial of a police officer accused of raping his
stepdaughter was due to start in the high court in Joburg on Tuesday.
The man, whose identity cannot be revealed to protect the victim, is
accused of raping the girl twice between 2004 and 2008.
During this period, he also allegedly indecently assaulted the minor,
according to the indictment.
The Star understands that the alleged sexual attacks started while the
accused and the victim were living in the same house, south of Joburg. The
girl’s ordeal is said to have continued after the accused and his former wife
relocated to Durban.
According to the indictment, the teenager’s mother, who was married to
the accused, had witnessed some of the alleged offences.
On Monday, the State said it was ready to prosecute the police officer,
who is facing two counts of rape and six of indecent assault.
The trial was initially expected to start on Monday but it was postponed
to Tuesday.
Acting Judge Klein said he had an urgent matter that had already started
last Thursday.
The suspect, who was granted bail by the Johannesburg Magistrate’s
Court, was arrested in 2009.
The matter is being investigated by Gauteng detectives.
If found guilty, the accused faces life imprisonment.
