JOHANNESBURG - A police sergeant has been arrested for the death of a Boksburg man in police custody, the Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) said on Tuesday.

"This arrest follows an investigation by the ICD which was started soon after the incident was reported," spokesman Moses Dlamini said in a statement.

The Beeld reported on Monday that Rean Ramdin, 29, died after he was shot by a policeman after being arrested during a raid at Presley's nightclub in Boksburg.

According to the report he was handcuffed when he was shot. The family had searched for Ramdin after he failed to return home. They identified his body at the Springs mortuary.

Dlamini said police claimed they were called to the club after the Ramdin was allegedly found with drugs.

"They took Mr Ramdin away in a police vehicle after handcuffing him. It is alleged that he jumped out of the vehicle and ran away," said Dlamini.

"The police shot and killed him after he allegedly ignored warning shots."

The 39-year-old officer was expected to appear in the Boksburg Magistrate's Court on Wednesday.
