In 2010 Van Rhyn were also investigated for his "alleged links to the criminal underworld" [10], when Tebogo Merafhe, President of the National Rental Association of South Africa, fingered him as "a key member of the so-called Hillbrow Mafia" [57], "having a cosy relationship with [Alan] Kukard" [57], "who owns the notorious Hillbrow Inn and Maxime Hotels which are openly run as brothels" [57]. Also in 2010 the "Johannesburg High Court ... awarded Berea businessman Herbet Mandlbaur R150000 for false arrest related to continuous police harassment linked to Hillbrow station's acting commissioner Koos van Rhyn" [10].
