Media Statement
20 January 2012

An Independent Complaints Directorate (ICD) investigation has resulted in the conviction and sentencing of former Reunion SAPS constable, Jomo Thabane Dube (29) for murder. The former policeman was today sentenced to life imprisonment by the Durban High Court for killing his then girlfriend, the late Zodwa Shongwe at Kenville informal settlement on 12 March 2009. The deceased was shot in cold blood in the presence of her 2 year old son.

The former policeman who has since been discharged from service was kept in custody since his arrest on the night of the incident until the finalization of the court case after the state successfully opposed his attempts to get bail on four separate occasions.

The protracted court case was finalized in December 2011 when Dube was found guilty as charged. He was handed a life imprisonment sentence today by the Durban High Court.
