Police, traffic officials arrested for corruption

37 year old police constable and a 50 year old traffic official both appeared in court this morning after they were arrested on two separate charges of corruption.

Polokwane- A 37 year old police constable and a 50 year old traffic official both appeared in court this morning after they were arrested on two separate charges of corruption.

In the Seshego Magistrates’ Court, detective constable Solomon MobolawaMalatjie (50) appeared in the Seshego Magistrates’ Court after he allegedly demanded a bribe of R1000-00 to make a “docket disappear”. The complainant is this case was arrested late in December 2014 for the possession of suspected stolen property by the Constable, but the prosecutor at court declined to prosecute because of insufficient evidence. The detective told the complainant that he could still be re-arrested and demanded R1000-00 for the docket to disappear. A meeting was arranged and the detective was arrested shortly after the money was handed over. During the court appearance he was given R1000-00 bail and the case was remanded to 27 February for further investigation.

At Nebo, the 50 year old head of traffic, Steve Boy-Boy Mohlahla appeared in court on charges of corruption and theft. It is alleged that he false impounded a taxi and accepted bribes instead of issuing fines for traffic offences. The owner of the taxi had to pay him R2800-00 to have the vehicle returned to her. The suspect was released on R1200-00 bail and will appear in court again on February 19.
