Johannesburg - A policeman allegedly shot dead a 14-year-old boy in Palmietfontein near Aliwal North in the Eastern Cape, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said on Monday.

Spokesperson Moses Dlamini said the boy was shot dead on Friday, when the police tried to prevent the community from gathering illegally.

He said the community dispersed and later gathered again.

"It is alleged that the police arrived and assaulted members of the community and shot at them."

He said the police were allegedly wearing balaclavas.

The boys were allegedly assaulted, tortured and forced to do push ups.

"Apparently the boys were told to run and as they were running, the police fired shots toward them.

"One of the boys [14-year-old] was shot and died."

He said the shooting was only reported after the scene was cleared.

The Ipid would also open a case against the police for late reporting in terms of section 33 of the Ipid Act, he said.
