Johannesburg - A Western Cape policeman has been arrested for allegedly raping a 14-year-old boy in Worcester, the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid) said on Wednesday.

The officer, based at the Worcester police station, was arrested on Tuesday for the crime committed on 30 June, IPID spokesperson Moses Dlamini said.

The boy was alone at home at the time of the attack. His mother was working a night shift at the time.

"There was a knock on the door, but when the boy went to the door there was no one. The victim, who was scared, went to the neighbour's flat to report the anonymous knock," Dlamini said.

He told him to sit down, and that he was the one who had knocked. He then allegedly raped him.

Dlamini said the boy reported the matter to his mother in October. The police were informed and he was arrested.

The man would appear in the Worcester Magistrate's Court on Thursday.
