‘Arrogant’ cops yet to quiz witnesses, 6
days after killing Nando's employee

Cape Town – A top forensic expert has agreed to investigate a
police shooting in Cape Town that saw a mother-of-two being mistakenly killed
on her way home from work.
David Klatzow, who has investigated more than 2 000 cases, has
been hired by Nando’s to investigate the murder of Phumeza Fudumele, an
employee of the fast food chain in Sandowns near Tableview, Cape Town.
One of Fudumele’s co-workers, Zanele Dineka, was shot in the leg.
Klatzow said police responded with “arrogance” to questions from
Nando’s, the TimesLive reported. It was also claimed police have yet
to even interview witnesses about the incident.
The restaurant chain’s business development director Trudi van
Niekerk said the shooting apparently happened when their staff members were on
their way home to Dunoon after an evening shift, News24 reported.
Western Cape police say they shot at the Toyota Avanza the
restaurant’s employees were travelling in because the vehicle matched the
description of one used in ATM bombings earlier that day.
But one of Fudumele’s colleagues, who was one of those in the
vehicle, told the Cape Argus that police did not even fire warning shots,
they just felt bullets hitting the Avanza.
A neighbour who heard the gunshots told the newspaper he didn’t
hear any sirens, but only the bang of the bullets.
Klatzow also told the TimesLive that after the employees had been
shot, the vehicle’s driver panicked and started running away and the police
began shooting at him.
Independent Police Investigative Directorate told News24 that its
investigation into the incident is “on track”.
With regards to witnesses being interviewed, IPID spokesperson
Robbie Raburabu said: “Witnesses will be contacted in due time.”
Raburabu said that while the information IPID has received from
the police “might be sketchy”, it was enough for the body to kick start its
investigation.
“Investigation is a process. We do not have [a] timeframe within
which the witnesses should have been interviewed. No police officers have been
arrested as yet until the investigation is completed.”
