JOHANNESBURG – A female traffic officer has been arrested for kidnapping
in Thohoyandou after a 17-year-old and her newborn baby went missing, Limpopo
police said on Tuesday.
SAPS spokesperson Colonel Ronel Otto said “She was arrested
after she allegedly kidnapped a mother and her one-month-old baby.”
The officer had contacted the teenage mother and offered to
assist her with registering an identity document.
“The mother was called by the suspect (officer) on Friday and
said she would pick her up and help her with her application for an ID document
so she can register the baby,” said Otto.
The teenager and her baby were reported missing after she did
not return home the following day.
Otto said the baby was found unharmed with the traffic officer,
but the mother was still missing.
The 43-year-old officer was expected to appear in the
Thohoyandou Magistrate’s Court soon on charges of kidnapping.
