motorist has complained after his vehicle was stripped at a police station
pound in Cape Town.

his vehicle was stripped at a police station pound in Cape Town.
The reported that the motorist went to the pound to fetch his car, which
had been recovered after being stolen. The wheels of his Nissan Sentra were
missing and the vehicle was standing on four jacks. “When I checked the
register it said that my car had been in good running condition when it was
found,” said owner Errol Courie.
His vehicle was stolen from his home in Retreat early in February. It
was recovered on April 8, but he only found out last week that the police had
found it through the investigation company that traces cars for the insurance
industry.
Courie said his car was at the vehicle pound at the Philippi police
station. “The tyres, the battery, radio, speakers, the spoiler and even parts
of the engine were missing,” he said.
The police inspector at the station, Fred Spocter, said he had taken out
the radio and speakers to ensure they were not stolen and would give them back
to the owner. But Courie said the inspector had not told him that.
Spocter admitted that cars had been stripped at the vehicle pound. “It
has happened several times and we are investigating the latest case,” he said.
“Only one commander is in possession of the key to open the gate of the
stolen car section. I’m very confident that the cars are being stripped by
thieves from the outside,” he said.
Courie said the explanation did not make sense. “I find it very strange
that this can happen in a police station,” he said.
